Books and Reviews
- Brand New! A friend of a friend has just published a new cookbook especially for folks with CD, IBS, diabetes
and heart disease. (She wrote for those conditions specifically because she's personally familiar
with them all. She felt she doesn't know enough about UC to say anything about it.) It's called Elizabeth's Healthy Home
Cooking. I had some small input in the book, making some suggestions, including the
addition of a food diary to help folks keep track of problem foods. The book is beautifully done,
with lots of color photos of the recipes, and detailed substitutions for each of the diseases
mentioned. Here's a local news paper article
about her and the book.
- Carol Sveillich (who facilitated an IBD support group in San Diego for
years, and was instrumental in encouraging me in the early days of running
this web site) has a new book out,
"Just Fine: Unmasking Concealed
Chronic Illness and Pain". In it she profiles 55 people from all walks
of life who live with illnesses and conditions such as Crohn's, ulcerative
colitis, IBS, Lupus, diabetes, and more. There is lots of information
about the conditions, as well as a wealth of coping tools from real
life.

Know Your Rights: A
Handbook for Patients with Chronic Illness.. Written by
Jennifer Jaff, Crohn's
patient, CCFA member, and attorney from Hartford, CT, the Handbook
addresses many of the legal issues patients with chronic diseases
face every day. Jennifer
acquired her knowledge of these issues not only through her own struggles,
but through years of providing free legal advice and assistance to
patients with IBD. The Handbook is her attempt to answer all of the
questions that she has been asked over the years in as thorough a manner
as possible while avoiding confusing 'legalese'. The expanded, second
edition is available now.
- Darryl D. Helems has written a book,
Check Your Pride
at the Door,
about how he has lived with IBD for 20 years
and it is due out this coming Fall (2006).Ê At this time, the site contains
a press release, author information, book content, and IBD Resource page.
-
Living Well with an
Ostomy, by Elizabeth Rayson is a day-to-day guide to the care and
feeding of an ostomy, with tips on coping with all aspects of living with
one. Useful and reassuring information for folks of all ages.
- The
Colitis Cookbook has its pages online. It's a collection of recipes
from a highly restrictive diet, developed expressly to deal with
ulcerative colitis.
- Peter Waite's
Crohn's
Disease Resource Center at HealingWell.com has some significant revisions, including illustrations,
online articles, and the
IBD-IBS Bookstore at WellnessBooks.com
(which includes book
reviews & abstracts on Crohn's, IBD, and chronic illness).
- Heather Van Vorous has a web site announcing her new book,
Eat Without Fear. It's a
comprehensive look at how diet can affect IBS. She's got recipes,
too.
- Some Book Reviews
by Sheila Ruffel. She's read the books listed in
the Info Resources FAQ, and gives a couple of paragraphs on them. This item was first
published in the
IBDList, a moderated mail list dedicated to issues arising
from living with various inflammatory bowel diseases. (2/7/96)
- Here's an excerpt from a book by
Edward N. Siquel, M.D., Ph.D., a
researcher at Boston University Medical Center. The book, "Essential
Fatty Acids in Health and Disease," reports results of Dr. Siquel's
research into the health effects of essential fats and saturated fats,
and corresponding dietary guidelines based on his findings. (Excerpted and
submitted by the author.)
- Crohn's, Colitis, Hemorrhoids, and
Me,
by Kathlene J. O'Leary, is a new book written by a Crohn's patient,
describing her experience with the disease, surgery, and recovery. They
sent me a review copy, and it's pretty good.
